Protection Fire Company No. 1 is a private, nonprofit organization, which was incorporated in 1922 for the sole purpose of providing fire protection for the Byfield Precinct of the Town of Newbury. The Company owns and maintains the building, apparatus and associated equipment, which is funded through donations and fundraisers. In 1958, the Company purchased it's first ambulance and began offering emergency medical services to Byfield as well as fire protection. This is a service that we continue to offer today. Proceeds from ambulance runs also aid in the purchasing and upkeep of equipment.
The Station is staffed on the day shift with two (2) full-time firefighter/paramedics.
Second shift and weekends are staffed with one (1) firefighter/EMT.
Members of the call department/ambulance auxiliary respond as needed to provide additional staffing.
The original Station, located at 5 Central Street, was built in 1930 and served the Company well for many years. As equipment grew larger and training requirements and staffing also increased, there was a need for change. The Company anticipated this eventual need and began saving 25 years ago for a new facility. In May of 2004, we broke ground on a piece of land purchased by the Company to build what would become a state of the art facility. In June of 2005, the new building was occupied. The Company has over $1,000,000.00 invested in this new facility, which was all done at no cost to the taxpayer. Our new Station is working out very well, and we are forever grateful to all the people and organizations that donated time and money to make this dream a reality. As always, the community supported us to make this all possible.
The Company consists of thirty-five (35) call members, and an ambulance auxiliary. This is a truly dedicated group of individuals who do a tremendous job for minimal amount of pay. When the alarm sounds, day or night, these dedicated members respond to aid victims in their time of need.
Due to the nature of our operation, donations are always accepted and appreciated. This helps us provide the best possible service to the community, which is our sole purpose. Occasionally there are openings on the call company for firefighters, and there are always openings on the ambulance auxiliary for certified EMT's. Anyone interested in either position is encouraged to contact Fire Headquarters for further information.
